As part of the Next Generation Secure Identification Document Project, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will issue newly designed Permanent Resident Cards (Green Cards) and Employment Authorization Documents (EAD Cards). Although USCIS had the cards ready for distribution on May 1, 2017, USCIS will continue to issue the cards in their current format until their supplies are depleted before transitioning to the new cards.
The new designs include enhanced graphics and security features to protect against fraud. Accordingly, the new cards will be more “tamper-resistant” and “highly secure.”
According to the USCIS website, the new cards will:
- Display the individual’s photos on both sides;
- Show a unique graphic image and color palette:
- Green Cards will have an image of the Statue of Liberty and a predominately green palette;
- EAD cards will have an image of a bald eagle and a predominately red palette;
- Have embedded holographic images; and
- No longer display the individual’s signature.
In addition, the Green Cards will no longer have an optical stripe on the back.
Both the old and new versions of the card are acceptable for Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, E-Verify, and Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE). Additionally, some of the older Green Cards do not have an expiration date. These cards will remain valid; however, it may be a good idea to apply for an updated card to better protect against fraud or verification issues.
Furthermore, employers should become familiar with the new designs to streamline the hiring process.
