As a permanent resident in the U.S., you acquire a right to work in the U.S. Although some jobs are limited to U.S. citizens, in most cases you can work at any legal establishment of your choosing. In addition, the laws of the U.S. will protect you, including the law of your state of residence and local jurisdiction.
Furthermore, you will be able to enter and leave the U.S. without an Immigration Official denying re-entry into the U.S. You will be able to start your own business, apply for citizenship, and receive financial aid for education.
Please not however, that the right to vote applies only to U.S. citizens. In order to vote in a U.S. election, you must become a citizen through the naturalization process. As such, there are many other benefits to becoming a U.S. citizen.

Responsibilities as a Permanent Resident
Permanent residency status confers upon the recipient a few responsibilities. It is your responsibility to maintain your residency status by following the laws of the United States. This means that you must file income tax returns and report your income to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service. Similarly, you must support the democratic government and not change the government through illegal means. Additionally, if you are a male between 18 to 25 you must register with the Selective Service.
You must also maintain your residency status. Other than refraining from violating U.S., state, and local laws you must renew your green card before it expires. Most green cards are valid for 10-year periods.
